Mala tempora currunt...in England too. At 71 of Saint James's, all finishes with the elegant and perfectly British-old- style reception, the ancient boiserie and the pictures of W. Churchill and Gen. Montgomery. Hair cutting and "bird trimming" are left to a less Brit-old-style multiracial team. Banned the old style and borying knives. .., all the hard work is done by the trimmer (made in China). A subtle trrrrrrrrr sounds all around the ancient woods. ...Just seated, I tried to explain to my "barber" what I was looking for; he answered: "...dont worry and relax..." (because of his mood in authentic P.E. Baracus style, I renounced to any kind of reply and resistance). Results: one year of a serious ITALIAN barber efforts (Erika, I miss You!!!!) destroyed in TEN minutes and hair cutted like Adso da Melk in the well known Il Nome della Rosa. The bill was in perfect Brit-new-Arabian- Russian-Indian-Chinese-Style: 100 GBP; fortunately issued by the same elegant and pleasant old Brit Style Lady. I to ok the liberty to underline that, as per the menu, "hair cutting and beard trimming" did 90 GBP. "...there is the neck shaving, Sir!...". "...Oh, yes, what a stupid man I am!!!!...". Churchill and Montgomery are probably turning in their graves. Trick and Bills.
Did the full gentleman grooming experience here for 110 GBP. Overall unimpressed. Haircut, shave and quality of products is definitely there, but service is very poor. I felt unwelcome most of the time. I suppose the staff reserve their smiles only to regulars who pour thousands of pounds a year here. When I asked to buy a shaving cream, staff was not even able to present me options properly, just reading the available fragrances off a list instead of offering me to smell them. I also forgot my jumper in the store, came back one week later. Jumper was gone and staff was again very uninterested.Never again.
Its the worlds oldest barber shop for a reason, you cant stay in business 200 years and not be the gold standard. My hair was cut by Nazim, who proved that while the business is old, the technique and quality is cutting edge. World class service at the worlds oldest barber, what more could you possibly need? Definitely a must experience while touring London.
Had my first ever straight razor shave. It was a truly wonderful experience. The barber took the time to explain the process and educate me on using my own razor more effectively. I purchased products at the end and was truly satisfied with my experience. This place has history and I hold no fault with the ownership marketing thier history and sharing the experience around the globe.
This barber is a pretender. Trading on their heritage but sadly failing to deliver. Well located in St Jamess with a pleasant enough entrance it goes downhill from there. The staff are generally rather poor and not what one would expect given the claimed prestige. Gentlemen would be well advised to avoid Nazim in particular. He was clueless and relatively incompetent, and either suffered from extremely bad breath or body odour, possibly both. The repulsive whiff was overwhelming at times and very unpleasant. Overall very unimpressed, I may as well have gone to a barbers in Shepherds Bush or Commercial Rd for 10 as Id have received a better cut. Frankly given there are loads of good hairdressers around youd be better off elsewhere. The shop has had little money spent on it in recent years (20 years even by the look of it) and is quite tatty. Talk about resting on their laurels!
